This interview is held with Eman Borg (He/Him) - CYGEN Coordinator
Eman Borg: Angellah, this is not your first role within CYGEN, and it is very exciting to have you on board for the next two years. Tell us about your experience and previous role in CYGEN?
Angellah Manda: Thank you for the space! I am a gender practitioner from Southern Africa, specifically Malawi, with over 7 years of experience dedicated to issues of gender and youth empowerment. I've had the privilege of working with various organizations, including as you mentioned CYGEN in my post as the Gender and Governance Lead for CYGEN from 2022 to 2023. Currently, I work as an energy advisor for an INGO here in Malawi, focusing on sustainable development through gender-sensitive approaches.
Eman: To have such a role at such a young age is definitely something to celebrate. Through your experience, what would you say is your Million Dollar Dream?
Angellah: I am very passionate about issues of gender and youth empowerment because I believe that providing equal opportunities and support to young people, regardless of gender, is crucial for building a just and progressive society. Ultimately, my million-dollar dream is to break down barriers and create a more inclusive and equitable society where every young person has the opportunity to succeed, regardless of their gender. My participation in the work of CYGEN and that of numerous other organizations over the years has solidified my passion and created opportunities for young people in Malawi and beyond.
Eman: Now that is a powerful vision. Who is your biggest inspiration to actuate such vision?
Angellah: I've been fortunate to be surrounded by amazing women who inspire me every day, but my mother stands out. She has broken countless barriers throughout her life and consistently makes a significant impact, whether through her work or community activities. She is a staunch advocate for women's empowerment and seizes every opportunity to advance this agenda. With a mother like her, how could I not be inspired?
Eman: I do hope I meet your mother as well, and learn more about her experience. You have been a CYGEN member since 2020, why should young gender activists engage with CYGEN?
Angellah: Young gender activists should engage with CYGEN for several reasons. Firstly, it’s a community where they will find like-minded peers and explore opportunities for collaboration. Secondly, CYGEN is incredibly resourceful, boasting a knowledge hub developed by its members. It also organizes various trainings and workshops that are invaluable for young people in the field of gender. These resources empower activists to strengthen their independent work within their communities. Lastly, CYGEN provides a platform for young people from across the Commonwealth to voice their concerns on an international stage, amplifying their advocacy impact. This platform allows them to contribute to broader advocacy efforts and benefit from collective action on global issues.
Eman: How has your experience with CYGEN shaped your advocacy work?
Angellah: My time with CYGEN has been transformative. It has provided me with a supportive network of passionate individuals and equipped me with the tools and knowledge needed to advocate effectively for gender equality.
Eman: Lastly, what’s your favorite ice cream flavor?
Angellah: Definitely Vanilla! We all can do without the other flavors.
Eman: Vanilla is a classic choice! Thank you, Angellah, for sharing your insights with us.
